The city was the scene of several fun nights with my best friend Kaeko san. Takayama is a picturesque mountain town in the Hida region, famous for its historical charm and natural beauty but also for its many sake shops… It is an ideal destination for those who want to immerse themselves in traditional Japanese culture and discover hidden treasures away from the main tourist routes, all within walking distance of each other.
1. Takayama Old Town (Sanmachi Suji)
Start your journey in Takayama Old Town, also known as Sanmachi Suji. This historic neighborhood features narrow streets lined with old wooden merchant houses, sake breweries and traditional shops. My favorite Sakeria is Funasaka, one of the oldest and equipped with a big variety of sake that you will have the opportunity to taste if you decide to take a Sake Tour. Stroll along the cobbled streets, taste local sake and purchase unique souvenirs. Don’t delay though…here the shops and commercial activities close at 5pm.
2. Miyagawa and Jinya-mae Morning Markets
For an authentic local experience, visit Takayama’s morning markets. The Miyagawa Market is located along the Miyagawa River and offers fresh produce, local crafts and street food. Jinya-mae Market, located near Takayama Jinya, is another great place to discover local specialties and interact with vendors.
3. Takayama Jinya
Takayama Jinya is an ancient government office from the Edo era, the only one left in Japan. Explore the well-preserved rooms and surrounding gardens to get a sense of how the region was administered in the past. Guided tours offer insights into the history and function of the Jinya.
4. Sakurayama Hachimangu and Takayama Festival
Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine is one of the main shrines in Takayama. If you visit the city in April or October, don’t miss the Takayama Matsuri, one of the most famous festivals in Japan. During the festival, richly decorated allegorical floats parade through the streets and puppet shows enliven the city.
5. Hida Beef: A Gastronomic Experience
Takayama is famous for Hida beef, one of the finest beef in Japan. Try this delicacy in one of the many local restaurants, where it is served in various preparations, from beef sushi to Japanese barbecue (yakiniku). Only one place I can recommend in the city… the best in my opinion, that is Ajino Yohei.
6. Okuhida Onsen
A short distance from Takayama, in the Okuhida region, you will find numerous onsen (hot springs) surrounded by nature. Relax in the warm waters surrounded by mountains, particularly evocative during the winter when they are covered in snow. Some onsen offer outdoor bathing with panoramic views.
