Kanazawa has a special place in my heart because it was my “home” for about 2 and a half years.
It’s a perfect destination for those who want to explore Japanese culture and traditions away from the most beaten tourist routes and where I can recommend many restaurants and places to visit. Here’s why you should include Kanazawa on your next trip to Japan.
1. Kenroku-en: One of the Three Great Gardens of Japan
It is considered one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan and a paradise of tranquility and natural beauty. Each season offers a different landscape: from the cherry blossoms in spring to the red leaves in autumn, to the snow that covers everything in winter.
2. The Samurai and Geisha Districts
Higashi Chaya is one of the most famous geisha districts, where you can stroll among the ancient tea houses and perhaps watch a traditional performance. My friend and teacher Chika san lives here where you can experience the unique art of the Tea Ceremony in a typical Japanese Machiya. And then the Samurai District, Nagamachi, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of warriors with its ancient houses and narrow cobbled streets. Nomura House is probably my favorite and its pond is one of the most beautiful in Kanazawa.
3. 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
For those who love contemporary art, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is a must-see. This museum houses innovative works by Japanese and international artists, offering a fascinating contrast to the historic atmosphere of the city. A few steps away, don’t miss a delicious freshly baked MelonPan in the small shop whose name says it all…World’s Second Best Freshly Baked Melon-Pan Ice Cream!
4. Omicho Market
Omicho Market is one of those places where you know when you arrive but you never know when you leave! It’s a great place to enjoy local cuisine and is known as the “Kanazawa Kitchen”. This lively market offers a wide range of fresh produce, from seafood to local vegetables. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste sushi prepared with freshly caught fish!
5. The art of Kaga Yuzen
Kanazawa is also famous for its fine art of Kaga Yuzen, a kimono dyeing technique. You can visit workshops where local artisans create these hand-painted silk masterpieces and even attend a workshop to try this ancient technique for yourself.
6. Culture and Tradition
Before leaving, stop by the Kanazawa Gold Leaf Museum to discover the art and history behind this tradition. You can also try making your own gold-covered item as a unique souvenir.
