Located a short distance from Tokyo but I recommend staying at least 1 night because it’s a bit long to be reached and there are so many things to do that if you don’t stay at least 1 night in the area I’m sure you will regret it! Known for its hot springs, breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and its cultural attractions, Hakone is a paradise for every tourist.
A recommendation… don’t get angry if Fuji san doesn’t show up! Clouds or other natural conditions could block the view (especially in summer) but don’t give up, it could be a reason to return! I managed to get a glimpse of the famous Fuji san on my third trip to Japan!!
1. Lake Ashi and View of Mount Fuji
Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) is the heart of Hakone and offers spectacular views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Take a cruise on the lake on one of the colorful pirate boats to admire the surrounding landscape. On the lakeshore, visit Hakone-jinja Shrine, famous for its red torii that appears to float on the water, a perfect location for memorable photos.
2. Hakone Ropeway and Owakudani Valley
Climb the Hakone Ropeway for a unique experience that takes you above the Owakudani Valley, an active volcanic area with sulfur fumaroles and hot springs. Here you can try Owakudani’s famous black eggs, boiled in the sulphur-rich waters of the valley, which are said to extend your life by seven years!
3. Onsen (Hot Springs)
Hakone is renowned for its hot springs so you absolutely must stay in a traditional Ryokan and take a bath in the onsen surrounded by nature before delighting your palate with a traditional Japanese dinner and dressed in the traditional yukata (cotton robe) provided by your ryokan. If you have tattoos, opt for a room with a private onsen, a little expensive…but don’t lose the chance!
4. Hakone Open Air Museum
For art lovers, the Hakone Open Air Museum is a must-see. This unique museum combines outdoor sculptures with modern artwork, all set in a beautiful natural landscape. The interactive art installations and Picasso Pavilion are particularly interesting and offer excellent photo opportunities.
5. Hakone Tozan Railway
Enjoy a scenic ride on the Hakone Tozan Railway, one of Japan’s oldest narrow-gauge railways. The train will take you through deep valleys and steep slopes, offering spectacular views, especially during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage season. The trip is an adventure in itself and a picturesque way to explore the region.
6. Hakone Shrine and the Torii on the Lake
Don’t miss the chance to visit Hakone Shrine, located at the foot of Mount Hakone and accessible via a picturesque stone staircase surrounded by ancient cedar trees. The shrine’s red torii, which sits on the shores of Lake Ashi, is one of the most photographed spots in Hakone and a symbol of good luck and protection.
